Values go beyond concepts. Values live and breathe in our behavior, attitude and belief system whether conscious or not. Successful leaders are intentional about their professional future and make their decisions based on deliberately chosen values. One way to examine the power of values is from our real life experience, particularly our past peak professional or personal experience. Taken from the model of appreciative inquiry, which is based on positive psychology, recalling a past success to reshape the future – in this case, harvesting values from a past positive experience – is very effective in getting to our core values. Values give life and energy to the goals we pursue, especially when they have impacted past successes. This is one way to discover the values that drive, aspire, give purpose and connect us with others in our professional and personal lives.
